What is Private IP—and how can you use it to step up security?

Hacks at small and midsize businesses seldom make headlines. But that doesn’t mean you have nothing to worry about. Research shows 72% of cyber security breaches were focused on companies with less than 100 employees.1

Whether you’re handling your own network or you’ve hired a local IT firm to do it for you, now is a good time to ask: Are you doing enough to protect your valuable data?

A private IP network can help. Verizon's Private IP solution offers the scalability and connectivity of IP with the security and reliability of proven network technologies to help protect sensitive information and your business applications.

Plus, with Private IP, you get the benefit of an efficient, simple network design that can grow with your business. It consolidates your applications onto a single network that’s easier to manage. Best of all, it’s separate—and safe—from the public internet.

Public vs. private IP

What’s the difference between a public network and private IP? A public network lets any device connect and access other networks without a password. All traffic passes in and out of the router without being encrypted or secured. That obviously creates a risk.

With a private network, the entire network shares one public-facing IP address—assigned to the router—so the wider internet can’t see how many devices are connected, what kind they are, or what information they’re passing in and out of the router.

Authorized devices need a password to connect to the private network, and traffic that passes in and out is encrypted. Best of all, unauthorized devices can’t get in and share viruses or open the door for hackers.

Security is a big benefit of private IP. If the router receives data that wasn’t requested by one of the devices assigned to your private IP, it throws it out, potentially warding off problems for your network, applications and data.

Private IP networks, because they’re private, are less vulnerable to technical difficulties outside the network. This is especially helpful if you don't have the resources of an enterprise to fix problems if your network goes down.

If you’re on point to protect your business and keep it up and running, you can’t afford to take chances. A more stable network means more uptime—and more time for you and your employees to get work done.

Looking to connect locations? Look to Private IP.

Verizon Private IP is more than a single private network tied to a single router—it’s a virtual private network (VPN) that uses multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) to extend a private network across multiple locations.

For some companies, this means multiple offices in multiple cities or across state lines.

For others with a remote workforce, a private IP VPN helps connect a moving target of home offices, business travelers and reps in the field that need access to protected data to complete assignments.
